－Origin of Gushan Book Garden
The sound of the drum invigorates the body; its spirit stirs the soul; its strength comes from the bloodline.
As heavy as a mountain, stable and secure; rich in reserves, full of vigor; level ground, outstanding heights.
Since ancient times, Gushan has produced many talented individuals, with its rich history and human resources contributing to the fine tradition of cultivating learning and passing down knowledge through generations. Famous figures such as Venerable Xingyuan and Venerable Qingzhi, who rebuilt the Sunlight Rock Temple on Gulangyu Island, all hail from Gushan.
On May 8, 2017, the foundation of Gushan Book Garden was laid, adding brilliance to Huabiao Mountain in Gushan Village. Based on the concept of inheriting humanities, this groundbreaking initiative marks a new era and lays the foundation for the flourishing of Gushan culture.
The completion of Gushan Book Garden was made possible by the generous support of Mr. Hong Shiyu, a Gushan native residing in Hong Kong, and the dedicated efforts of the village committees and elders, who provided assistance throughout the project. This is the first community book garden established through self-initiative in Nan'an City, and with it as its core, the people of Gushan strive to build Gushan Village into the most renowned cultural village in Southern Fujian!
Mr. Shiyu was born into an ordinary farming family in Gushan Village. His life journey has been filled with hardships, experiencing countless joys and sorrows. Studying was his childhood dream. However, his early family circumstances forced him to drop out of school after graduating from high school.
His father, Hong Tianpu, went to Hong Kong in 1973 to work in low-level labor. In 1981, when Mr. Shiyu was 11 years old, he, along with his mother and younger siblings, left their hometown and went to Hong Kong to join his father. For ten years, they squeezed into a dilapidated wooden house, facing countless hardships. They experienced several typhoons that ripped off roof tiles and nearly destroyed their home; they survived a fire that almost completely burnt their dwelling. Time and again left homeless, they endured countless days and nights of hard work, which instilled in them remarkable resilience and determination!
To do a good job, one must first sharpen their tools. Despite the difficult circumstances, Mr. Shiyu maintained a positive spirit, never giving up on his studies. He cultivated a calm attitude, possessing a broad-minded and courageous heart. His life journey is filled with meaning and wisdom. His father's support and the help of kind benefactors have given Mr. Shiyu a deep sense of gratitude.
The land of Shijing and the mountains and waters of Gushan are the roots that connect Mr. Shiyu and his father, Hong Tianpu. Since 2012, Mr. Shiyu has frequently returned to Gushan with his father. Influenced by his father, he actively participated in various social welfare activities and the construction of the Southern Fujian Liugui Culture Festival. He donated nearly 4 million yuan, reflecting his father's teachings and his heartfelt desire for the prosperity of Gushan culture, representing the great aspiration for the flourishing of Gushan humanities.
Returning home, leaves falling back to their roots; accumulating sand into a tower, unity achieving greatness. It is fortunate for Gushan to have such dedicated individuals!
The combination of mountains and rivers, rural scenery, all integrated together, allowing visitors to Gushan Book Garden a broadened perspective of the entire village!
This fresh and elegant place offers a clear view of Kinmen Island. This book garden, which revitalizes Gushan, is a place where history, future and humanities meet, gather, energize, and nurture!
Culture unites hearts, knowledge shapes character, and enhances people's morale and inner confidence. Gushan Book Garden serves as a gathering place for public welfare culture in Gushan, acting as a vital window showcasing Gushan's image to the outside world. It is bound to be developed meticulously and further promote Gushan's spiritual civilization construction!
This is a landmark building in Gushan Village, a monument to the people of Gushan's pursuit of a happy and healthy life in line with the new era and their great aspirations.
The Truth of the Book Garden: Gushan of Books, Public Welfare Culture
The establishment of Gushan Book Garden aims to inherit and promote the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation and strengthen cross-strait cultural exchanges and cooperation. Through cultural festivals, book garden forums and other forms, it disseminates Neo-Confucian and Southern Fujian culture.
The Book Garden creates a positive learning environment for Gushan, driving the enthusiasm of the villagers to beautify their homes based on public welfare ideas, responding to the national strategic decision of "Book-Fragrant China, National Reading".
It integrates Zheng Chenggong culture, utilizes resources from overseas natives, and actively promotes cultural learning enthusiasm in various places, cultivating a reading theme. It uses fashionable and innovative concepts to lead everyone to work together, using culture to promote economic development and using culture to build beautiful homes.
While actively engaging in cultural exchange, Gushan Book Garden has teamed up with Xiamen's "Xiyuan Academy" and Kinmen's "Yan Nan Academy" to form an alliance for joint construction and resource sharing, which contributes to the diversity and expansion of bookish culture in the cross-strait region and Southern Fujian, promoting their common development. It also contributes to the construction of Nan'an City's cultural tourism!
The Book Garden has invited Professor Lin Huadong, a researcher at the Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, director of the Institute of History, member of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, professor at Xiamen University's History Department, recipient of the special allowance from the State Council in Zhejiang Province, and a native of Shui Tou Daying; and Mr. Zheng Ruiyong, a painter from Xiamen Customs and part-time editor of Xiamen Xiyuan Publishing House, as "Honorary Publishers".
Five Functions of Gushan Book Garden:
1. Gushan Reading Room: Providing an elegant and high-quality reading space, cultivating reading habits in Gushan, and creating a village-wide reading atmosphere;
2. Gushan Culture Hall: Inviting renowned scholars nationwide, as well as cultural lecturers from various places, to cultivate a new generation of farmers with enhanced cultivation in the new rural context;
3. Gushan Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition Hall: A permanent exhibition showcasing artworks, providing a place for appreciation and artistic cultivation;
4. Gushan Calligraphy and Painting Studio: Planned as a cross-strait art creation base, it will host Kinmen residents, local elites, calligraphers and painters, and serve as a venue for the first group of renowned artists' association, functioning as a platform for cultural and artistic exchange across the Taiwan Strait;
5. Gushan Cultural and Artistic Salon: Regularly holds cross-strait academic seminars, developing Gushan into a renowned Minnan cultural village with a strong literary atmosphere.
